This story is legend in here in Seattle. This was during SeaFair, supposedly execs lined up to buy the jet after that. It was a huge hit. He practiced it first, out of sight behind Mt. Rainier.

Sorry, but large commercial aircraft do not have to go through "mandatory aerobatics" as part of the certification. Aircraft are tested for maximum design performance (takeoff, rejected takeoff, Vmu (minimum unstick speed) such as at the beginning of the video. All this is designed to ensure the aircraft performs according to design specifications, but I agree some of the testing may look like aerobatics. The barrell roll got Mr Johnson a trip to see senior management - for impressing customers.
