I think 6 Sigmas was based on a system that was known in 70's and widely implemented by Motorola, who improved and it quite a bit. It was Motorola who dubbed it 6 Sigmas and registered it as their service mark, though.

hey bloggerjoe, are you an ex-GE employee? :Pwelch's method is tough, but it is necessary to create a better organization. cause your organization is as good as the people of which it is made. better people means better performance and better results. getting or maintaining only the best means you got to fire the bad ones.

This fucking asshole would fire your ass without a second thought about you, your kids, your mortgage, or anything else. His philosophy is to always be turning up the heat on people, give them frequent performance reviews so they can be easily set up for dismissal, and to constantly turn over 10% of the employees. The people who carry out his methods are nothing but axe people, who would be the first to cry "sweatshop" if they had to work hard. Fuck you Welch.

One of the strengths of Mr. Welch was holding middle managers accountable to corporate goals/values and to their subordinate employees. A tuff position. On the negative side, is owning a TV network (Trash Producer) really worthwile and was it possible to save more jobs here in U.S. with a longterm turnaround strategy rather than the fast, short-term dumping of nonperforming parts? He's right about passion. Most companies pay lip service to the idea-mine does. Does GE?

Welch is a womanizer, and skirt-chaser, and he was over-rated. Never forget that Welch took the helms of GE in '82, which was the beginning of a 18 year bull market (the greatest in US history), and he retired in '00, which precluded the worst stock market era since '29. Most of Welch's value-add was a result of the '82-'00 bull secular bull run.
