Well, of course it IS pop music, yet it is an alternative sounds to some of the other music popular at that time. It isn't Madonna, that's for sure! And in my part of the country, the top 40 pop radio stations would never have touched this group or other "alternative" pop groups. So, hooray for alternative college stations!

New Wave IS pop. It's punk-influenced 80s pop.

I think of them as a pop group, but I don't mean it in any derogatory sense.At least, as time progressed, their music seemed to take aboard more 'pop values'.I regard this song, for instance, as a pop song; inasmuch it's got a melody that COULD be presented more or less on its own, and still be quite interesting.Being pop doesn't mean you you're not allowed be complex, though.I have more problems regarding 'Making Plans For Nigel', which is from the year before(1979), as a pop song. |
