Sorry, but your friends are talking nonsense, BH was massively popular in the UK, his brand of humour was the very epitome of the "end of the pier" comedy tradition which grew out of the wake holidays of the British working class, though Hill's comedy eventually became universal of course, indeed, the Queen was said to be a fan. The perceived notion that he became unfashionable later on in his career is mostly a PC fantasy.

Benny was my hero growing up, they used to show reruns of his show in sweden during the 90s. Very popular comedian back then.

Ive been told by English friends of mine, that although Hill was very succesful among the rest of the world, he wasnt very popular in the UK. British probably found his humor very extreme I guess. In any case, when his show appeared in greek tv around the last years of the 80's, he became massively popular. I really like his Benny Hill personas, and I felt really bad when I heard of the news about his death. He was young and he could easily work for about one decade more.

READ!!!!!Benny Hill was considered funnier than Monty Python by a UHF station (WLVI TV Channel 56 in Cambridge, Mass) that ran both shows! I agree!
